Courage and integrity
Acts of courage comes from within. It is a state in which you are guided by your principles to speak out or act against the majority will. We all carry deep values that are nurtured from the day we are born and shaped by our surroundings, but it is only truly tested when we have to speak up for them amongst adversity.
In the novel, Night, the main character, Eliezer's Wiesel is very religious and is keen to learn more about the mysteries of universe. His father is highly respected in the community and society respects him in the highest regard. Eliezer's belief in his religion and the values he inherits from his upbringing is truly tested when his family is forced into concentration camps. He and his father never see his mother and sisters again once they get to the camp. They realize that the life that they live will no longer be the same. Throughout, extreme conditions and adversity that they both face on a daily basis, Eliezer's faith in his religion is tested. He becomes very angry with God and loses his faith in God and human relationships. When he begins hating his father because he feels he is a burden to him, Eliezer becomes angry with himself for thinking of this and prays to God to give him the strength not to have such thoughts. Despite his loss in faith of God, his personal integrity and belief in caring for his father gives him the courage to fulfill his obligation.
Throughout the story, humankind is tested. Where once there was a relationships between fathers, sons, relatives and friends, these relationships were torn apart by the need to simply survive. for example, a son killing his father for a loaf of bread. And there were many occasions where Eliezer was faced with the similar situation, he never compromised his belief in the value of life for his own basic needs even though he lost his faith in humanity. It took personal courage to avoid in participating in barbaric behaviors that surrounded him which showed his true integrity.
Eliezer' s integrity and courage was tested as he questioned his own faith in God. But, all the decisions he had to make during adverse times, was guided by the values that his religious upbringing taught him.
