In the beginning of the story, Eliezer’s father is a respectable Jewish leader in the community in the town of Sighet. Although his father is a high level leader in the community, he still tends to make the same mistakes that any other Jewish person would make. There is danger that strike the community but because Eliezer’s father isn’t willing to take any risks or leave the community, Eliezer’s father decides not to emigrate out of Sighet, but instead to stick it out and see how things play out. Eliezer’s father starts off by being a very optimistic person. For example, he always has faith in that things will be okay, especially when he is about to be transported to a concentration camp, but instead he decides that his family shouldn’t go into hiding with their maid, Maria. After this point in the book, were Eliezer’s family reaches the Birkenau concentration camp, we see Eliezer’s father start to become more of a realist. He tells his son Eliezer that they are in danger and that the officers in the concentration camp will kill and burn the prisoners. As the story progresses, Eliezer’s father becomes weak and ill, and starts to rely on Eliezer. His character changes again through Eliezer’s father becoming really ill and the man who was once a community leader, starts to act as if he was a child; where he is easily shows his emotion and becomes completely dependent on Eliezer. When Eliezer had to take care of his father, he was usually a problem with reducing Eliezer’s chances for survival, but most of the time, Eliezer’s father was the reason of why Eliezer kept on living. Whenever Eliezer has mistaken his father’s death, he lost the will to live. His father helped Eliezer maintain his humanity by having to take care of him while he was ill and weak. Once Eliezer’s father died, he said that nothing in the world mattered anymore and we learn about Eliezer’s greatest regret; where he had wished that his father didn’t die alone and how he wished that he would have stayed up with his father and took care of him instead of sleeping through the night.
